Farm Manager

Position Purpose: State Fair Community College is seeking a hands-on, community-focused professional to manage operations of our 200-acre demonstration farm and associated resources. In this role, you’ll work closely with the agriculture faculty to strengthen ties with local industry partners and support real-world learning experiences for students. We're looking for someone detail-oriented and collaborative, someone who thrives working with students, employers, and community members to help grow the region’s agricultural workforce. This position also includes teaching responsibilities within the agriculture program.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Manage agriculture resources and farm operations in alignment with State Fair Community College’s mission.
  • Develop, implement, and revise the agriculture operations plan to support evolving educational programs and available resources.
  • Oversee daily farm operations, maintenance services, related projects, coordinating with agriculture faculty and external partners as needed.
  • Work with the agriculture maintenance technician program faculty to ensure shared use and upkeep of all agricultural equipment.
  • Create and maintain tracking systems to support the agriculture operations plan and related activities.
  • Assess student workforce needs for continuous farm operations and collaborate with faculty to integrate hands-on learning with coursework.
  • Hire, train, and schedule student workers in partnership with faculty to support ongoing farm activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies related to agriculture operations.
  • Partner with agriculture faculty to establish industry relationships that enhance training and program relevance.
  • Participate in the agriculture program advisory group alongside faculty.
  • Recommend marketing strategies and initiatives to the division dean.
  • Support agricultural education by facilitating demonstration projects and industry engagement.
  • Help develop and maintain community partnerships to strengthen the SFCC agriculture program.
  • Prepare and manage the agriculture operations annual budget.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support college operations.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a closely related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing diversified farm operations, including livestock, forage, and crop systems.
  • Previous teaching or training experience is highly preferred but not required.
  • Commercial applicator license preferred with appropriate category(s) to farm operations
  • Preferred qualifications include a demonstrated passion for education, familiarity with the community college student population, and a strong commitment to SFCC’s mission and values.
  • Candidates should value academic rigor, student retention, and outcomes assessment, and be skilled in applying active-learning techniques.


Skills:

  • Proven experience in farm or maintenance operations with a customer-focused, service-oriented approach. 
  • Skilled in operating, calibrating, and repairing equipment used in agricultural production/operation.
  • Expertise in managing livestock, forage, and crop systems.
  • Hands-on knowledge of farm equipment, including tractors, tillage tools, harvesters, balers, backhoes, bulldozers, and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to plan and deliver agriculture courses, with strong written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in using technology for instruction and farm management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage positively with diverse individuals on and off campus.
  • Demonstrated student-centered mindset and capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to take initiative, accept additional responsibilities, and work collaboratively.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through written and electronic means.
  • Ability to move throughout the campus, 200-acre farm, and off-site locations as needed.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or remain on foot for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform hands-on work with farm equipment.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 20 to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in environments with exposure to hazardous fluids, chemicals, and other materials common to farm operations.
  • Ability to properly wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) related to agriculture-related hazards
