The Lab Specialist is a unit specific position within the Science Department who is responsible for the purchasing, laboratory preparation, equipment and maintenance of the science labs at the direction of the science faculty. This individual demonstrates the ability to contribute positively and collaboratively to a problem solving work environment. Under limited supervision, the Science Lab Specialist provides science lab support for the Science lab instructors. Provide exemplary, thorough, and courteous customer service to all students, staff, and faculty. Completes preparation for individual lab set ups, maintains Chemical Hygiene and inventory and equipment control.

This position will have a work distribution as follows: approximately 50% of time will be devoted to Biology labs, approximately 30% of time will be devoted to Chemistry labs, and approximately 20% of time will be devoted to Physical and Earth Science labs. Administers other duties as assigned by the supervisor.  There are no teaching requirements expected or required for this position.


• Fully prepare laboratory activities in advance of expected lab date.
• Purchase supplies from vendors or local stores for all our campuses.  
• Maintains chemical hygiene program according to standards– which includes, but is not limited to, proper storage of chemicals, maintaining chemical inventory, mixing solutions, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Proctors lab exams and oversees lab if needed.
• Assists with lab exam setups and take downs.
• Assists with Field trips as necessary,
• Maintains mobile computer cart.
• Maintains science equipment and models in good repair.
• Coordinates lab prep requests to ensure readiness.
• Works cooperatively with science faculty to seamlessly facilitate lab preparation.
• Models effective and appropriate use of lab equipment and storage.
• Participates in faculty and other division meetings.
• Confers with faculty and supervisors to determine training needs.
• Promote lab safety and present Lab Safety programs.

Knowledge of: Science principles, particularly coursework in Biology or Chemistry laboratory settings.

Education: Minimum at least 4 collegiate science lab classes and prefer experience in as many undergraduate science classes as possible.
Associates of Arts in Science field (prefer Chemistry or Biology) preferred.
Prefer experience with organizing and maintaining science supplies in an educational setting.

There is occasional sitting, with frequent walking, standing and stooping required. There is an occasional need to lift objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
